In My San Diego Garden and Kitchen
The arugula thrives in the cool nights and warm, sunny days. Too much for us so I have plenty to share.

I harvested the first of the Easter Egg II radishes yesterday. With more time to tend the garden I doubt I’ll have any golf ball sized radishes this year. I planted a shorter row and about two weeks later did a succession sowing. It’s about time to do another so I’ll have a regular supply of radishes for my winter garden salads. This one I ate in celebratory fashion—whole with dinner. More ready this week for salads.
On those winter garden salads I’ll use some of the sage blueberry vinegar I made recently. I had a few blueberries on my patio bush but also added a couple from the freezer.
Salad for lunch is determined by what catches my fancy on a trip to the garden. Here’s the first of the ‘Black Magic Kale’, arugula and Lollo Rossa lettuce.
On a whim I decided to try growing Zinger Hibiscus for tea. Germination was suboptimal and the plant struggled but now in December has produced the desired calyxes. I know what to do differently for next year to produce a six-foot tall plant.
I’ll pop out the large green seed and dry the red portions. I’m afraid this will be about one large cup of ruby-colored tea which Renee’s describes as “floral, berry aroma and well balanced, cranberry-like flavor.”
On my walk yesterday I paused for the first of the poinsettias of the season. Both were growing in the ground, the first likely tended for a flush of bloom. The second is how I recall them growing around Southern California, rising to heights of 5-8 feet. My mother would gather a large bouquet every year for us to enjoy in the house.
