Flowers Persist

Flowers grow in wild places.
Flowers grow in streets and dumps,
in meadows and swamps,
on mountains and where armies pass.
They come, not called for or planted,
Not planned or bought or ordered,
But because it is life’s way.
The tiny golden petals will outlast
The tyrant or the dollar
Because it is life’s way.

Excerpt from “I Will Build a City from the Discarded Wings of Dragonflies” by James Hubbell.
