Hover Flies and Tiny Flowers

Tiny flowers attract the soldiers in the pest wars in my garden. Mustard, dill, thyme, carrot, celery, parsley, fennel flowers—they all have a place in my garden at various times.

Parsley

Hover flies feed on flower nectar and pollinate some crops. Hover fly larvae eat aphids, small caterpillars including cabbage worms, as well as thrips, scale, and tiny mites. I delight to see the hover flies in my garden. They are the soldiers in the pest wars and I’ve had very few aphids bothering my vegetables this spring.
