In My San Diego Garden and Kitchen

I harvested the last third of the kumquats over the weekend and I knew their destiny. You can see that on my next post in two days.

If kumquats are a mystery to you, here’s the description from Specialty Produce:
The fruit’s peel is sweet, subtly floral, and fruity, balancing the tart, sour taste of the flesh, creating an intense sweet-tart combination with a zesty, citrus zing.

The apricots are coming in slowly—only a few pounds this week but that’s ok as we try to keep up with the strawberry guavas. There’s just enough apricots to enjoy for lunch and snacks.

I processed about six pints of strawberry guava puree last week and mixed some of it with rhubarb compote for flavor and color upgrades.

The ‘Seascape’ strawberries are luscious and large. Since they are day-neutral, we look forward to harvests into September.

Alpine strawberries mixed with diced strawberries top our breakfast cereal.

With about 50 navel oranges remaining on the tree, which is unusual, we make orange juice a few days a week and use the oranges in fruit salad. I squirrel away orange zest and cubes of orange juice in the freezer for use in the off season.

The remnant beets and carrots made way for the summer corn. The misshapen and pygmy carrots went to rabbit friends and all the greens were devoured by chickens.

Can anyone ID or name this little guy?

On a more serious note, it is Memorial Day, or “Decoration Day” as my grandmother called it. We took garden flowers to the nearby Miramar National Cemetery where my husband’s parents remains are interred.
