In My San Diego Garden and Kitchen 1-9-17
My garden continued to grow in the winter sun and gentle rains while I had knee replacement surgery just before Christmas. Only this week could I step down into the garden and see what had changed since December 21.
My spirits soared as I saw the lettuce and greens bed. Family had been bringing in what was needed for salads but to see the imagined color harmonies growing and thriving was thrilling. For gardening is my art.
Here’s one of the three early heads of ‘Premium Crop’ broccoli I harvested this week. The stalks are so tender and flavor unlike most purchased broccoli. It is my favorite vegetable.
Snow pea production ramped up while I was breaking in a new knee. Thankfully, my husband collected them between rain storms and tending to me.
We have a bumper tangerine crop this year with easily several hundred of them on the tree. Anyone who stops by leaves with some. Their concentrated sweetness in the tiny sections are a perfect winter treat.
There are more harvests to share but they weren’t captured in photos. Next week, perhaps. For now enjoy these cheery calendulas that edge my broccoli bed.
