The cucumber vines liked the heat this week and when watering them I was surprised to see the first cuke ready to harvest. From an inch to nine inches in short order.
The cucumbers have done much better this year. I got them off to a good start in pottery trays.
My garden soil is so sandy it’s hard to keep consistent moisture with direct seeding in the summer garden. The vines climb a trellis now and thrive.
I processed twelve pounds of strawberry guavas last week and more await for this week.
Cooking them in six pound batches then running them through my grandmother’s chinois yields seven cups of puree, enough for two batches of guava jam.
A neighbor up the street has mountains of pine needles in his front yard. Over the weekend I loaded two large trash cans full for mulch around the yard and vegetable garden. I handed over a jar of strawberry guava jam as payment in kind. He’s a pilot for Hawaiian Airlines so accepted the gift with special enthusiasm.
And the ‘Berry Basket’ zinnias make me smile. The pollinators in the vegetable garden like them too.
