In My San Diego Garden & Kitchen 1-18-16

We had weekend visitors–our nephew and his family here in San Diego for a wedding. Kai,10 was eager to harvest kale to take home.

His sister, Addy who is 12 stuffed French sorrel leaves in a bag so they could have a favorite sorrel, shrimp and pasta dish at home. They received sorrel in a CSA box in the past but can never find it in the grocery store.

Addy and Kai’s family just moved to a new home. They’re anxious to plant a garden but that awaits a visit from their grandpa who will build a fence to keep the farm animals out. I’ll give them a chunk of my sorrel plant when they’re ready. 

I wish Addy and Kai lived nearby. They were so eager to learn about my garden. Many of us can recall pleasant garden experiences with a family member that sparked a life-long interest in growing things.

It is still citrus season though I can count the tangerines that remain on the tree. A few volunteer calendulas are under the sunny side of the tree so I gathered some for the picture.

I’d wish for a mound of Tuscan kale but will settle for enough for a small salad. It’s still early in the season.

In a few weeks I’ll have a plateful of Tuscan kale salad.

Though we have no snow, I’ll close with a wintry white bouquet, perhaps to cheer those of you whose gardens are tucked in and covered in snow.
