Lettuce Season

10 January 2011

Lettuce season begins after a cool and rainy fall. "Cut and Come Again" from Renee’s Garden is the heirloom mesclun mix I’ve used for several years. After two or three cuttings, I’ll harvest from a second, sequential sowing which will continue until the summer garden.

There’s time to plant lettuce now, either in the ground or in containers. Some gardeners grow mesclun in pots near the kitchen door for ease of harvest. Lettuce is simple to grow–a good place to start edible gardening.

Follow the link to the Renee’s Garden description of “Cut and Come Again”. You’ll also find five mesclun mixes and several lettuces well-suited for containers. “Raising the Salad Bar” is an excellent article on growing lettuce.
