NY Times: Heirloom Seeds or Flinty Hybrids?
1 April 2011
Offered as part of my Seed Series posts, follow the link for an excellent article from Home & Garden, New York Times. Michael Tortorello surveys the new heirloomism and the boom produced for purveyors of heirloom seeds. His thoughtful look at heirloom and hybrid seeds offers the best hope which does not “romanticize old seeds.” This new movement aims “to rebuild the regional farming culture that invented those cultivars.”
What are you planting this year? I usually have a mix of heirlooms and hybrids. Every year, I save seed from my open-pollinated snow peas, lima beans and sweet peas. It’s a pleasant way to come full circle in the garden.
