Scenes from the Second Season Garden

October 31, 2012

Over the next few posts, I’ll chronicle the progress of my winter garden. It began this year with planting seeds for broccoli, cabbage and lettuce in late August.

In recent years I’ve direct seeded or bought transplants for the winter garden. When I lived in New England, my cellar had lots of seedlings under lights in the late winter. (Bi-coastal moment). There’s something very familiar and comforting about this process of growing from seed.  It’s about nurturing. It’s a hopeful thing to do.

Two types of broccoli for comparison–seed blends from Fedco and Renee’s Garden.

I was happy to press into service my collected four inch pots.

As usual, I should have done this a week earlier.

Now the broccoli plants wait to supplant the peppers this weekend. Meanwhile they bask in the autumn warmth, growing strong.
